Picture a world where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to learn and grow. This is the harmonious tune of true equality and the shared melody of our humanity.
At Promise Hill Project, we are committed to making this vision a reality through our Education Program, for we firmly believe that education is the most powerful investment we can make in creating a better future for all. Basic education should be the cornerstone of progress, but in many places, it remains a stark symbol of inequality, where barriers like gender discrimination, economic disparities, and inadequate resources obstruct access to this fundamental right.
Coming up on November 28, 2023, it is GivingTuesday, a day that encourages people to do good. Join us on The Promise Hill Project on this GivingTuesday, become part of the global generosity movement. Your donation makes a big difference to the lives of our children.
The Basic Education Challenge
Basic education, often taken for granted in developed nations, remains an elusive dream for many in developing nations. Gender and economic disparities, coupled with limited resources, leave multitudes of people from the lesser privileged sections of society, deprived of basic education. This disparity also creates a significant gap between higher and lower levels of education.
According to UNICEF, over 600 million children and adolescents worldwide are unable to attain minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics, even though two thirds of them are in school. For out-of-school children, foundational skills in literacy and numeracy are further from grasp.
The UNICEF lists the reasons why children are deprived of education and learning:
- Poverty – one of the biggest factors
- Living through economic fragility, political instability, conflict or natural disaster
- Restrained by disabilities
- Belonging to ethnic minorities
- Limited opportunities for the girl child
Education is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: it is identified as a stand-alone goal (Sustainable Development Goal or SDG 4) and is also present as targets under other SDGs on health, growth and employment, sustainable consumption and production, and climate change. Our carefully devised education program helps under-privileged children get access to basic education needs. Your education donation is of vital importance to help you do your bit towards achieving SDG 4.
Crisis Deepened by COVID-19
The lives of young children, students, and youth have been significantly affected by the havoc caused by COVID-19. The pandemic has worsened the existing education crisis, leading to unparalleled disruptions in both societies and economies, profoundly impacting education.
According to the World Bank, in low and middle income countries, the share of children living in Learning Poverty – already 57% before the pandemic – increased to an estimated 70% in 2022 given the long school closures and the wide digital divide that hindered the effectiveness of remote learning during school closures, putting the SDG 4 targets in jeopardy. Analysis has revealed deep losses, with international reading scores declining from 2016 to 2021 by more than a year of schooling. These losses may translate to a 0.68 percentage point in global GDP growth. (Source: worldbank.org/en/topic/education/overview)
