Staying Warm and Safe: Supporting the Homeless During Winter

January 25, 2025
Help homeless individuals thrive this winter with Promise Hill Project

Winter can be harsh, especially for those without a roof over their heads. The frigid temperatures and biting winds pose serious health risks, including frostbite and hypothermia. For individuals experiencing homelessness, staying warm isn’t just about comfort—it’s about survival.

At Promise Hill Project, we recognize this urgent need and are committed to offering short-term shelter in the Dallas area during these cold months. Beyond shelter, here are a few ways to combat the cold and stay warm and safe while coping with homelessness.

Layering Up: A Simple but Effective Strategy

Wearing multiple layers of clothing can help trap body heat effectively. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add insulating middle layers like fleece, and top it off with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Accessories like gloves, hats, and thermal socks are essential for retaining warmth.

Seek Out Warm Spaces

Finding warm locations during the day, such as community centers, and shelters, can make a significant difference. At Promise Hill Project, we provide short-term shelter and offer a safe haven from the cold.

Stay Active to Generate Heat

Light physical activity, such as walking or stretching, helps maintain body temperature by boosting circulation. However, avoid overexertion, which can lead to sweating and, eventually, chills in cold weather.

Use Insulating Materials

Cardboard, blankets, and sleeping bags can provide insulation from the cold ground. Reflective emergency blankets are also a great option, as they retain body heat efficiently.

Eat for Energy and Hydration

Eating high-calorie, nutritious food provides the energy needed to stay warm. Drinking warm beverages like tea or soup can help maintain body heat, but avoid alcohol, as it can lower core temperature.
